Thrips on Chives

Chives, scientifically known as Allium schoenoprasum, are enduring herbaceous plants belonging to the Liliaceae family, cherished for their foliage that serves as a flavorful addition in cooking. Being part of the onion family, chives produce petite bulbs from their roots. These herbs can reach a height of about 46 cm (18 in) and thrive for numerous years when provided with suitable conditions.

These insects are small and swift, displaying distinct fringed wings. They extract sap from various plants, including a wide range of vegetables, and pose a significant threat to agricultural crops such as tomatoes, peppers, onions, and leafy greens. These pests create silver spots on the leaves, rendering the produce unsuitable for sale. In large populations, they hinder plant growth, leading to stunted development, and can also transmit viral diseases. Their presence in greenhouses can present a significant challenge.

To get rid of thrips:

To eradicate potential alternate hosts, it is advisable to remove weeds and grass surrounding garden areas. Additionally, it is important to tidy up any crop debris in the garden, particularly leaves from onions or chives, once they have been harvested.

Please note that dry mulch does not attract thrips, while green mulch does.

Prior to introducing any plants into your garden, thoroughly inspect them for signs of thrips or any damage caused by these pests. If any infested plants are found, securely bag and dispose of them in the trash.

Sticky traps can be beneficial for monitoring adult thrips populations.
